This modality relates to the fascia, the layers of connective tissue that wrap each muscle and each fiber separately. Here the goal is to open up tension patterns in the fascia to allow more movement and range of motion to the muscle. In doing structural integration, body patterns and imbalances are tested and observed during the massage. Those imbalances are addressed directly by working to open the fascia layers, giving the muscles room to release, rebalance and realign. This literally creates greater structural integration throughout the body.
