While deep tissue means getting into deeper levels of muscle tissue, it does not necessarily mean it has to be painful. The idea of getting deeper can be approached by a gentler touch that warms up the area to relax the tissue. This allows access to the smaller, deeper muscles. Deep tissue work allows trigger points to get focused attention with the intent of increasing the range of motion and dealing with chronic pain like arthritis, fibromyalgia and intense back pain. By spending more time on an area with specific intention, the tissue is allowed to relax and open up making space for healing the trauma in the tissue.
